Sept. 15, 2005 -
Jersey City, NJ - Wagner College senior quarterback John Sciarra (La Canada, CA / St. Francis / UCLA) set a new school record with five touchdown passes in a 52-25 win over host Saint Peter's College earlier this evening at Cochrane Stadium in Jersey City, NJ. Sciarra would end the day 22-32 for 298 yards as the Seahawks improved to 3-0 on the season, and the Peacocks slid to 1-2 overall.
Junior Chris Turner (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) was a large recipient of Sciarra's record setting night hauling in three TD catches, tying his own school record as he ended the contest with 7 catches for 117 yards. Also joining in the action were senior Shaun Grover (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) with a career high nine catches for 107 yards and one TD as well as senior Mike Malik (Warren, RI / La Salle Academy) 3-35, 1 TD. Graduate student Marcus Wilson (Staten Island, NY / Poly Prep / Univ. of Notre Dame) finished off the rest of the Seahawks scoring with a pair of touchdown runs, highlighting a 12 carry 86 yard evening.
Wagner, 3-0 for the second consecutive year, jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter despite just 3:00 minutes in time of possession. Sciarra hooked up with Grover from 23 yards out on the first possession before a 33 yard strike to Turner the next time down the field.
Saint Peter's QB Scott Bonnono would complete a 14 play 82 yard drive stretching 7:56, with a 1 yard dive at the 12:56 mark of the second quarter to make the count 14-7 in favor of the Seahawks. After three failed drives, Sciarra went to work once more connecting with Turner for a 16 yard TD. Three plays into the Peacocks ensuing possession, sophomore Thomas Davis (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) forced a fumble which was recovered by the Seahawks at the Saint Peter's 28 yard line with 13.6 seconds to play before the half. On the first play from scrimmage, Sciarra lofted a pass into the left corner of the endzone that Turner out jumped the defender for, giving him a third TD reception of the game and Wagner a 28-7 leading heading to the intermission.
After a Seahawk turnover on the opening drive of the second half, the Peacocks tried to climb back in the game with an 11 yard TD pass from Bonnono to Brandon Edwards. The extra point was then blocked and left the home team trailing 28-13. The Wagner offense marched down the field again as Wilson turned out a 37 yard run, his longest as a Seahawk, to set up the record setting fifth TD pass from Sciarra. Malik hauled in the 14 yard bullet from the UCLA transfer and put the team on top 35-13.
Wilson would add a 24 yard TD run later in the quarter that was answered by a 90 yard Carl Gowart TD kickoff return for a 42-19 Wagner lead following the failed two point conversion attempt. Sophomore kicker Piotr Czech (Keyport, NJ / Keyport) placed a 39 yard field through the uprights as the Seahawks ended the quarter on top 45-19.
In the fourth Wilson ran a TD in from four yards out and Sean Mayers (26-130 yards) added a nine yard TD run of his own for the Peacocks to provide the final 52-25 margin.
The Seahawks out gained Peter's 438-282, while scoring over 50 points for the first time since a 62 point outburst vs Jacksonville on November 15, 1998. Wagner also forced five turnovers in the game recovering three fumbles and intercepting a pair of passes. Senior LB Craig Romano (Syracuse, NY / Bridgton Academy) led the Wagner defense with nine stops.
The previous school record was held by Aaron Smith, who tossed four TD passes in a 35-6 win over St. Francis (PA) on October 21, 2000. Wagner returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host Marist at 1:00 pm.
