Men's Tennis Victorious in First Match of the Season

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's tennis team started off their 2005 campaign with a bang edging St. Francis (NY) 4-3 at home in Northeast Conference action.

The Seahawks took three out of six matches in singles play and two of three in doubles action. For Wagner Adam Amster (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) was a winner over Misha Vas in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, Frank Castanza (Howard Beach, NY/Holy Cross) out dueled Ernie Fuchs 6-3, 7-6, (7-3), and Will Shuler knocked off Rob Vandenburg 6-3, 7-6, (8-6). For the Terriers in first singles Arthur Velnik defeated Steve Johnsen (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) 6-4, 6-1, and Brandon Sogluizzo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) lost in an extra set to Elan Evans 6-3, 6-4, (7-4). The Green & White defaulted their final singles match to give the Terriers their third point on the day.

In doubles play the duo of Johnsen and Amster downed Velnik and Evans 8-4 while Sogluizzo and Castanza joined forces to cruise past Vas and Vandenburg 8-2. Wagner defaulted their final doubles match as well but with two victories in hand it did not factor in the outcome.

The Seahawks are next in action Wednesday, September 21 against Fordham starting at 3:30 pm in the Bronx.
