Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawk swim team remained undefeated after knocking off Sacred Heart and Providence yesterday at the 1st annual Blue Devil Duals on the campus of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. The Green & White defeated Providence by a count of 187-120 and dismantled Sacred Heart 239-62.
In a meet that featured seven schools Wagner only notched one first place finish but thanks to a host of top five finishes were able to earn enough points for the victories.
The Seahawks started things off with a second place finish in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of Halley Allen (Bryan, TX/Bryan), Amanda Males (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg), Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name), and Alyssa Montgomery (Yucaipa, CA/Redlands) tallied a time of 4:10.29.
The 1000-yard freestyle followed and this was an event dominated by Wagner. Senior Shannon Johnston (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) edged teammate Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) to get the win with a time of 10:28.61 ahead of Tomlinson's time of 10:29.25. Junior Kate Wilson (Brentwood, CA/San Francisco St. U.) rounded out the trio in third with a time of 10:44.47.
The fifth event, the 100-yard butterfly saw Radka nail down a third place finish clocking in at 1:00.25, and Montgomery notched a second place time in the 200-yard freestyle which followed at a time of 2:00.01. The 200-yard freestyle relay saw a photo finish as both Wagner and St. Francis (PA) tied for second place with the exact same time of 1:42.91.
The same team that took a second place finish in the 400-yard medley relay pulled out a third place time in the 200-yard edition at 1:54.23. Other solid finishes for Wagner included Tomlinson coming in second at 5:10.44 in the 500-yard freestyle, Radka taking third in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:14.15 and Eileen Dowd (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) also finishing third, but in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:34.23.
The meet was finished off with Wagner taking second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:45.51
The Seahawks are back in the pool on December 3 for the Yale Invite in New Haven, Connecticut.
