Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawk swimming squad moved to 3-0 on the early season with 161-98 victory over the Catamounts of Vermont University earlier tonight at the Spiro Sports Center. The Green & White tallied 10 first place finishes out of the 14 events in the meet.
The Seahawks got off to a fast start taking top honors in the meet's first four events. It started in the 400-yard medley relay when the team of Alyssa Montgomery (Yucaipa, CA/Redlands), Amanda Males (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg), Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) and Brigitta Roser (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) notched the first place finish with a time of 4:08.03. The 1000-yard freestyle was more of the same for Wagner with Kate Wilson (Brentwood, CA/San Francisco St. U.) tallying a top time of 10:40.13.
The 200-yard freestyle followed at event three and what followed was another Wagner win with Shannon Johnston (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) placing first with a time of 1:58.43. Montgomery was back in the winner's circle edging Rachel Kent of Vermont in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.12. Switching strokes to the butterfly proved no matter for Wagner when Radka picked up her second win of the evening at a time of 2:12.48 in the 200-yard race.
Montgomery garnered the hat trick with her third win in the eighth event, the 100-yard freestyle beating out two of her teammates in Roser and Johnston with a time of 54.86. The Green & White were back in first yet again in the 200-yard backstroke when Dana Helyer (Milford, CT/Amity Reg.) took home the win with a time of 2:17.67.
Back to back wins followed in the 11th and 12th events with Johnston winning the 500-yard freestyle at 5:13.57 and Radka landing a win in the 100-yard butterfly clocking in at 1:00.91. Wagner rounded things out taking first in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Montgomery, Johnston, Roser and Molly McDonald (Hickory, NC/Seton Home School) cruised to the win at a time of 3:43.75.
The Seahawks will next be in action this Sunday November 13, when they take on Siena and Canisius in Loudonville, NY starting at 11:00 am.
