Box Score
Staten Island, NY - Wagner College women's soccer lost a close one today against Long Island University by a final score of 3-2. The Seahawks drop to 2-10-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the NEC while LIU improves to 10-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the NEC.
The Blackbirds were the first to strike and scored the first half's only goal with an assisted goal by Selima Berisha in the 12th minute of the game. The match went back and forth with both teams putting forth every inch of effort they had.
Both teams took their fair share of shots during the game and Wagner came up with back to back goals in the second period with junior Heather Daubert (Middletown, NY / Minisink Valley) scoring her first career goal on a running shot from freshman Josephine Allain's (Centerville, MA / Barnstable) indirect kick. Wagner's first goal happened in the 71st minute, and eleven minutes later senior Betty Ann Rogers (Mt. Holly, NJ / George School) got a break away and blasted the ball past the goalie from five yards out.
From that point, it seemed like the Seahawks had sealed the deal if they could hold on to the 2-1 lead. But it just wasn't in the cards for today. LIU answered Wagner's goals with two more of their own, with Berisha scoring from four yards out (83:51); then out of nowhere in the 87th minute Jackie McCormick flew above the crowd in front of the goal and smacks in a header from three yards out. With only three minutes left in the game, the Seahawks surged forward with one last strike which fell short of pushing the game into overtime.
LIU held a 12-11 shot advantage and had three more corner kick attempts than Wagner (5-2). Freshman Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL / Satellite) collected five saves in goal while LIU's goalkeeper Stephanie Kansky recorded one save.
The Seahawks return to action on Sunday at Temple for a 3:00 pm match.
