Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's tennis team was knocked off in Northeast Conference action 5-2 by the Hawks of Monmouth University. Wagner was swept by the blue and white in doubles action but rebounded with two victories in singles play. It was not enough however to pull out the victory.
In singles action the Hawks got off to a hot start when Sarah Ragan outlasted Katy Carey (Montclair, VA/University of Miami HS) 7-5, 6-1. But Wagner battled back with two straight victories as Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ/Morris Catholic) downed Ashleigh Johnson 6-0, 7-6, and senior Megan Owen (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) edged Laura Giuliari 6-3, 6-4. However, Monmouth would battle back and take the next three matches with Kaitlin Gallagher hanging on against Aarti Mahtani (Montego Bay, JA/St. Andrews) 6-4, 6-4, Kelly Shedelbower getting past Marie Crane (Chesire, CT/Chesire) 7-6, 6-1, and Ashley Fornaro making quick work of Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH/Exeter Area) 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play it was all Monmouth. Johnson and Gallagher edged Carey and Frazza 8-6, while Ragan and Shedelbower rolled Owen and Mahtani 8-2. Doubles play was rounded out with Giuliari and Krista McCormick defeating the duo of Crane and Boyd 8-4.
