Box Score
Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's tennis team were downed in non-conference tennis action by the Peahens of St. Peter's College despite winning two out of three doubles matches. The final score was 6-1 in favor of St. Peter's.
It was singles play as to where Wagner struggled losing all five matches they played in and defaulting on the sixth. Angela Wiggs started it off for St. Peter's knocking off Katy Carey (Montclair, VA/University of Miami HS) 6-1, 6-1. Vanessa Punqikas followed suit taking down Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ/Morris Catholic) 6-2, 6-2. In the third match Kristy Bowmen was a winner over Megan Owen (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) 6-1, 6-0. Aarti Mahtani (Montego Bay, JA/St. Andrews) would not go quietly for the Green & White pushing the first set to the limit before eventually losing the match 7-5, 6-1. And Andrea Esteay rounded things out with a win over Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH/Exter Area) 6-1, 7-5. The Peahens notched their sixth win on a default.
In doubles play it was all Wagner. The Seahawks came out of the gates with a thrilling first match win as Carey and Frazza joined forces to defeat Wiggs and Punqika 9-8 (7-5) in a match that was forced into an extra set. That was followed by Owen and Mahtani making their way past the team of Melissa Aro and Jing Cheung 8-5. The final doubles match was awarded to St. Peter's on a default but Wagner had already earned the point for doubles play.
The Seahawks are next in action this Wednesday, October 12 when they host Monmouth at 4pm.
