Scott Smith embarks on his seventh season with the Wagner men's basketball program and his sixth as an assistant coach. Smith came to Grymes Hill in the 2010-11 season, serving as the team's Director of Operations.
Smith oversees player development, the overall support of the program and supervises the day-to-day operations of the program while being heavily involved in the team’s community service initiatives.Â
Since arriving on Staten Island, the Seahawks have posted an overall record of 109-78, including 69-37 during league play, headlined by the 2016 NEC regular season championship and the program's first postseason win in the 2016 National Invitational Tournament. Â
During his tenure at Wagner, Smith has mentored numerous all-conference honorees, including Tyler Murray (’12), Jonathon Williams (’13), Naofall Folahan (’14), Kenneth Ortiz (’14), Orlando Parker (’14), Latif Rivers ('14), Marcus Burton (’15), Michael Carey ('17) and Corey Henson ('18).
In 2011-12, his first season as an assistant coach, the team played two Top-25 schools (No. 4 UConn and No. 15 Pittsburgh). Â On December 23, in front of a national audience on ESPNU, the Seahawks shocked the Panthers, defeating Pitt 59-54 at the Petersen Events Center in front of 9,315 fans.Â
In 2015-16, the Green & White opened the season against a pair of Big East opponents in St. John's and Seton Hall. In the midst of a successful season, the Seahawks made program history, defeating top-seeded St. Bonaventure, 79-75, in the First Round of the NIT which set up a matchup with its third Big East opponent of the season, Creighton.Â
Off the court, Smith spearheads the program's involvement with the Staten Island community, which includes working with a program called Lifestyles. A program run twice a year, Lifestyles teaches young athletes (starting from the seventh grade and younger) basketball skills and drills and features members of the Seahawk men's basketball program.
Before coming to Wagner, Smith spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, NJ. Â At St. Benedict's, Smith assisted in the development of several players who have gone on to play professionally. Among the players are:

Before his time with the Grey Bees, Smith worked as an athletic administrator at his alma mater, Seton Hall, while serving as a youth program director for the Hoop Group in Neptune City, NJ. Â Back in 2009, he was selected to coach at the Reebok All-American Camp in 2009 and the Eddie Griffin Challenge in 2008 & 2009.Â
Smith and his wife, Eileen, are lifelong residents of Ridgewood, NJ and have three children, Kayleigh, Morgan and Kieran.
