Marquis Webb

Marquis Webb enters his fifth season as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program in 2016-17 and his sixth year coaching at the Division I level.

Webb, an accomplished standout guard at Rutgers University, mentors the Seahawks’ backcourt contingent. His day-to-day responsibilities include assisting in recruiting efforts, practice evaluations, scouting and film breakdown.

During his four-year stint on the Seahawks' sideline, Webb has helped guide the team to a 71-55 record, highlighted by a second-round appearance in the 2016 National Invitational Tournament (NIT), which came as a result of Wagner claiming the program's second-ever regular season title with a 23-11 (13-5 NEC) record.

In three of his first four seasons, the Seahawks ranked first in the conference in field-goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense and scoring defense. Among the entire NCAA, the 2015-16 Wagner squad ranked among the top-75 collegiate programs in each of those categories, with the most impressive season coming in 2013-14, when the Seahawks placed 12th in field goal percentage defense and 14th in three-point field goal percentage defense.

Webb has been instrumental in the development of many of current and former Seahawks guards. Last season, Michael Carey and Corey Henson each garnered NEC All-Second Team honors. Collectively, the Seahawk guards ranked among the top-five in six statistical offensive categories as the Green & White finished fifth in scoring (70.3), second in free-throw percentage (71.3), fourth in field-goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, and assists and third in assist/turnover ratio.

In 2014-15, Webb's third season with the squad, the guards accounted for 65.01 percent of the team’s points, which included an impressive 24.76 percent from eventual Northeast Conference (NEC) First-Teamer Marcus Burton (’15).  In year two, Webb helped the perimeter players on the 2013-14 squad to become more aggressive and a focal point of the offense, as the guards accounted for 69.2 percent of the team's total point production.  In his first year, the Wagner guards contributed 53.0 percent of the team's total scoring.

Since Webb’s arrival on Grymes Hill, the Seahawks have had at least one player rank among the top ten in scoring in each of the last four seasons, with Burton finishing second in the league scoring race in 2014-15.  During his Wagner tenure, the Green & White have had at least one player rank among the NEC’s top ten in rebounding, assists, top five in free-throw shooting, and top three in steals in back-to-back seasons (2012-13 & 2013-14).

Before arriving on Staten Island, Webb served as the Director of Player Development at George Mason University under the guidance of former head coach Paul Hewitt. During the 2011-12 campaign, his lone season with the Patriots, Webb helped guide George Mason to 24 wins, the third-most in school’s history, while playing a pivotal role in the emergence of Ryan Pearson, who became just the third Patriot student-athlete to earn Associated Press (AP) All-America honors.

Webb began his coaching career at his alma mater, Paterson Catholic High School, where he served as an assistant coach of the boys’ basketball team from 2008-2010, in addition to teaching history at the school. Webb also served as an assistant coach on the EYBL NJ Playaz Basketball Club and was the assistant director of Team Events for Hoop Group, based out of Neptune, NJ.

A four-year starter running the point for the Scarlet Knights, the 6’5” Webb amassed 1,026 career points for Rutgers in 124 career games.  A rock-solid defender, Webb ranks among the top-20 in program history in several statistical categories, including ninth in the career three-point field goal attempts (410).

After earning his bachelor’s degree in African-American studies from Rutgers in 2007, Webb played professionally for one season in Hungary and New Zealand before joining the National Basketball Developmental League’s (NBDL) Anaheim Arsenal for the 2007-2008 season.
