Tottenville, he guided the Pirates to two
PSAL championships, in 1997 and 2003. Additionally, his Tottenville teams made two title game appearances at Yankee Stadium (2012, 2013) among their five overall city appearances.
Munson's longstanding relationship with
Tottenville, where he graduated from in 1982 and was a stop-student-athlete from 1979-82, reaches back nearly three decades.
Among the hundreds of players he coached, a host of whom went on to play collegiately, including four who went on to play in the NFL, including Joe
Andruzzi (Packers, Browns and Patriots), Anthony Coyle (Green Bay Packers), Gus Edwards (Baltimore Ravens), and Adewale
Ogunleye (Dolphins, Bears, Texans). Additionally, Munson coached Abraham Kromah, who played for Edmonton in the CFL. Overall, Munson coached 27 Division I scholarship players.
Despite stepping down as head coach in 2015, Munson continued to serve as
Tottenvile's assistant principal and athletic director until 2020.
Munson earned a BA in physical education from Kean College in 1989. He then went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from Brooklyn College in 1999, from where he also holds a certificate in supervision and administration.
Munson and his wife, Michele, are the parents of a son, James, a former football standout under his father at
Tottenville who, following his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy where he also played football, is currently serving as a First LT. in the United States Marine Corps.
