NEWARK, N.J. – The Wagner women's soccer team showed grit on Thursday evening but ultimately fell 2-0 to NJIT at Lubetkin Field.
The Seahawks (1-1-3) put together one of their strongest offensive outings of the season, tallying
15 total shots and forcing four saves from the Highlanders' goalkeepers. Sophomore forward
Alana Arjona was active in the attack, recording a team-high six shots, including one on target, while senior captain
Izzy Gomez and junior captain midfielder
Alana Goldsmith each added multiple attempts.
Wagner's defense, anchored in the first half by senior goalkeeper
Shae McGinty, held NJIT scoreless through the opening 60 minutes. McGinty registered six saves before making way for sophomore keeper
Abigail Marcello, who gained valuable minutes in the second half.
The Green & White showed determination until the end, creating several late chances. Junior midfielder
Ava Pugliese forced a save in the 86th minute, and Arjona continued to pressure the Highlanders' back line with multiple second-half efforts.
Despite the final score, the Seahawks demonstrated resilience on the road, nearly matching NJIT in possession (49%–51%) and outshooting the Highlanders in the second half.
With the setback, Wagner turns its attention to the next challenge, they will be back home on Staten Island next week on Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. ET. versus Seton Hall.
