MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Wagner College women's soccer team wrapped up its record-breaking 2025 campaign on Friday night, falling 5–0 to No. 7 seed West Virginia in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The contest marked Wagner's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance following the program's inaugural NEC Championship last weekend. The Seahawks conclude the season with an 11–3–6 overall record and a program-best eight NEC victories.
The Mountaineers, ranked No. 16 nationally, opened the scoring less than a minute into the match on a penalty kick and added three more goals before halftime to take a 4–0 lead into the break. West Virginia extended its advantage with a goal in the 57th minute to make it 5–0.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Abigail Marcello tallied seven saves through 60 minutes of play, while senior
Shae McGinty added four stops in relief to combine for 11 total saves on the evening.
The Seahawks' back line, led by sophomore
Hailey Knapp and junior
Caroline Kessler, battled against a dynamic Mountaineer attack that recorded 34 total shots and 18 on target. Offensively, freshman
Ashley Smith registered Wagner's lone shot on goal in the match.
Despite the result, Wagner's 2025 season will go down as one of the most successful in program history — highlighted by the team's first NEC title, first NCAA appearance, and three consecutive NEC Tournament berths under head coach
Phil Casella.
