Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College football team competed in its final game of the 2024 season against the LIU Sharks on Saturday, November 23 on a windy Hameline Field.
In the end, LIU would prevail over Wagner by a score of 35-28.
With the loss, the Seahawks complete their campaign with an overall record of 4-8, with a conference mark of 2-4.
After falling behind by two scores in the first, senior Rickey Spruill scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the season to put the Seahawks on the board with under three minutes remaining in the frame.Â
Spruill finished with thirty yards on the ground and caught two balls for a total of 16 yards.
After a 94-yard kick return touchdown by LIU, the Seahawks trailed 21-7 after the first quarter.Â
The Seahawks would respond on the subsequent drive, as a four-play 46-yard drive was capped off with a 15 yard touchdown strike from graduate student Jake Cady to sophomore Teree McDonald who corralled his fifth touchdown catch of the season, and his second in the last two weeks.
In the second half, the Seahawks' special teams made a play as redshirt junior Riley Dravet stripped the ball from LIU's Michael Love before being tackled at the Sharks' one-yard line. Two plays later, graduate student Andre Hines punched in a touchdown to make it a one-score contest.
In the fourth quarter, graduate student Jake Cady snuck in a one-yard touchdown rush to make it a 35-28 ball game with just over five minutes left.
On the season, Cady accumulated 1746 yards with a 54.68% completion percentage and 17 passing touchdowns. Cady added 228 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns.Â
The Seahawks held possession of the football with a chance to tie the game with one minute to go, but failed to convert on a fourth and one to sophomore Jaylen Bonelli from the LIU twelve yard line.Â
On the day, Bonelli led the Green & White with four catches with 68 yards. On the year, Bonelli finished with 789 yards on 52 catches and six touchdown grabs.
Defensively, junior Jorel Liverpool led Wagner with seven tackles, with five solo and two assists. Senior Nicholas Gadson collected five tackles, as sophomore Armoni Itote, senior Luke Jakubauskas, junior Jordan Johnson, and graduate student Jalin Justice all secured four tackles for Wagner.
As a team, the Seahawks earned 19 first downs to the Sharks 15, and converted on 60% of their fourth down attempts, passing for 143 yards and rushing for 118.
