Amherst, MA – The Wagner College football team suffered a 35-7 defeat at UMass on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Zachary Ricci recorded an interception on the first play from scrimmage, but the Seahawks could not capitalize, as UMass took a 21-0 halftime lead.
On the first drive of the second half, Wagner orchestrated a 15-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by a seven-yard touchdown run by graduate student
Andre Hines Jr. For Hines, it was his first touchdown in a Seahawk uniform.
Senior
Rickey Spruill led the Seahawks with 90 yards rushing and eclipsed 2,000 career rushing yards on the day. As a team, the Seahawks rushed for 162 yards, with Hines and Spruill accounting for 142 of them.
Wagner had a chance to make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter, but a fake field goal attempt in the red zone came up a yard short, as UMass scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Graduate student captain
Jalin Justice led Wagner defensively with five tackles, a forced fumble, and a tackle for loss.
Wagner returns to Northeast Conference (NEC) action next Saturday, November 2, for a pivotal game at CCSU, with kickoff set for noon.
