New York, NY – The Wagner College football team suffered a 28-7 loss at Ivy League member Columbia on Saturday.
In his return from injury, senior
Nick Kargman completed 23 passes for 296 yards and one touchdown, while junior
Naiem Simmons led Wagner with seven catches for 128 yards.
Defensively, senior
John Gioia had a team-high 10 tackles and one tackle for loss, while senior Tahjir Tate had a team-high 1.5 tackles for loss along with nine total stops.
The Seahawks drove deep into Columbia territory on their first two drives but did not come away with any points. Trailing 7-0 with time winding down in the first half, junior Brandon Coleman forced a fumble at the Wagner 10-yard line to keep the Lions off the board.
Three plays later, Kargman hit Simmons for 57 yards to once again set Wagner up on the edge of the red zone, but the Seahawks could not capitalize.
After Columbia scored 14 points in the third quarter, Wagner fought back, with Kargman finding sophomore
Rickey Spruill out of the backfield for the Seahawks' first points of the game with 14:13 to play in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing drive, graduate student Nicholas Olivier forced a fumble, which was recovered by graduate student
Titus Leo to give Wagner the ball back, but it wasn't enough, as the Lions preserved the 28-7 victory.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Merrimack on Saturday, October 15, with kickoff set for 1:00 pm.
