Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils on Tuesday evening from Hameline Field. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-6-1 (0-5-1 NEC) while the Blue Devils move to 4-0-0 on the year and remain perfect in conference action with the same record.
The Blue Devils outshot the Seahawks, 23-5 for the match, and held a 13-2 advantage on shots on goal. CCSU also held a 4-1 edge in corners.
Despite giving up the three goals, Wagner sophomore goalkeeper
Erin Kelly recorded ten saves on the night while
Mya Donnelly,
Jordyn Price,
Ari Michitti,
Luisa Barone, and
Annie White all attempted a shot in the match with Barone and Michitti finding a scoring chance for Wagner.
Kristina Kelly headed the ball that found Kelly Brady, who in turn, sent a pass to Jenna Rae Covello on the right side and sent a shot into the back of the net that gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
Wagner's best chance to tie the match in came in the 25th minute as
Luisa Barone headed the ball on target but right into the arms of Central's Amanda McQuillan.
In the 38th minute, the Blue Devils struck for the second goal of the half. This one coming off the foot of Roma McLaughlin, who booted the free kick from the top of the box that curled past a diving Kelly.
When play resumed for the second half, the visitors found its third goal of the night as Rae Covello sent a pass that found Erica Bardes in the box, as she was able to put it past Kelly in upping the lead to 3-0.
The Seahawks pushed forward in trying to get on the board as Michitti controlled the ball and rocketed a shot on goal that was denied by McQuillan for her second save of the evening.
Wagner will have a quick turnaround as the Seahawks travel to Sacred Heart on Friday, April 9 for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
