Guenson Alexis rushed for two touchdowns in the first half, but it wasn't enough, as the Wagner Collge football team dropped a 28-14 decision to LIU on Saturday.
Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, head coach
Tom Masella called for a fake field goal in the red zone, with freshman kicker
Austin Hosier converting for the first down.
On fourth and goal, Alexis called his own number and punched the ball in to tie the game at 7-7.
With less than two minutes to play in the second quarter, the Wagner offense successfully executed the two-minute offense, with Alexis and senior
Messiah Divine recording big gains on the ground. With 1:10 to play in the first half, Alexis once again found the end zone to tie the game at 14-14.
On the following possession, sophomore
Christian Davis came up with the first interception of his young collegiate career, picking of LIU quarterback Camden Orth to end the first half.
In the second half, the Sharks pulled away, scoring one touchdown apiece in the third and fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Defensively, the Seahawks combined for six tackles for loss and two sacks, with senior
Titus Leo leading the way with two stops behind the line of scrimmage, including one sack.
Junior
Khari Jones led the team with eight total tackles, while graduate student
Ahmad Lyons and senior
Tre Vallar recorded seven tackles apiece.
The Sharks were led by Orth's three touchdown passes and move to 2-5 on the year while evening the conference record at 2-2.
Wagner will be back at Hameline Field next Saturday, as the Seahawks take on Merrimack at noon.
