Staten Island, NY -- Megan Drum scored a season-high six goals, but it wasn't quite enough for the Wagner women's lacrosse team Tuesday afternoon as the Seahawks lost a back-and-forth game to Monmouth, 17-14, at Hameline Field.
Audrey Cerrone and
Kasey Dorney each scored twice for Wagner, who also got goals from
Stefani Peluso,
Stephanie Falcone,
Madeline Seims and
Erin Kerstetter. Peluso added four assists for five total points and Kerstetter added a pair of helpers for her 14 straight multi-point effort, dating back to last season.
On the defensive end, Dorney added a pair of ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers and
Aileen Hannan added three ground balls and caused two turnovers as well.
Caroline Bleck, Rachel Mills and Nicole Ceraso all scored four goals for Monmouth; Ceraso added four assists for a game high eight points.
Dorney scored the first two goals of the game, one on a feed from Victori Tucci, the other off a feed from Peluso.
Monmouth responded with four goals from four different players, taking a 4-2 lead, before Peluso ended the run with a man-up goal off a feed from Kerstetter. Cerrone answered back-to-back goals from Ceraso to keep Wagner within two, 6-4.
The Hawks responded with two more goals to open an 8-4 lead, but Kerstetter and Cerrone scored 30 seconds apart, and Seims added a goal off a pass from Kerstetter, cutting the margin to one, 8-7.
The teams traded goals to end the half, with Drum notching her first of the day in the final minute of play.
After Monmouth scored the opening goal of the second half, the game turned into a game of runs from each team. Drum answered Monmouth's half-opening score with her second and third to square things at 10, and Falcone capped the Wagner run, putting the Seahawks in front.
After Monmouth countered Wagner's run with four straight goals of their own, seizing back a 14-11 lead, Drum scored three straight goals three minutes apart, knotting things once again at 14.
Monmouth responded with two goals less than a minute apart, then added the final insurance goal with less than two minutes to play for the final margin.
