Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team outshot LIU 10-9 but it was the Sharks which took advantage of a late opportunity and scored in the 70th minute en route to a 1-0 win at Hameline Field on a rain soaked Sunday afternoon.

Despite the heavy downpour at points, the Seahawks created the first chance of the match as sophomore forward Luisa Barone was able to get past her defender and boot a ball towards the net but it was directed wide.

In the 17', junior midfielder Julia Fitzsimmons was able to take the ball deep down the right side and send a feed that narrowly found the back left of the net but ricocheted off the post as the ball trickled away.

Senior goalkeeper, Delaney Beck, was able to keep the Sharks off the board in the first half, as she turned away a pair of shots, one coming in that final six minutes of the first half as LIU's Kendra Oldroyd fired a chance that was denied.

When both teams returned for the second half, the rain intensified, but the Seahawk momentum was on full display, as Barone got the feed from senior tri-captain, Maria Nunez, was booted the chance wide of the target.

The Seahawks continued to apply pressure as freshman Renata Djuravecevic was able to head the ball high over the net in the 52' and senior Autumn Clark had a chance off a free kick that was turned away by the Sharks' Kayla DeTreux.

The visitors broke through for what turned out to be the game-winner as Hedda Einarsson, who had checked a minute before, netted the go-ahead tally in the 70'. Einarsson corralled the loose ball after Beck was forced away from her post and sent a shot from the middle of the box that found the back of the net.

The Sharks were looking to increase the lead when in the 86', Julia Duffy went one-on-one against Beck, from point-blank range, but the Bakersfield, CA netminder was able to make the stop, keeping the Seahawks in the match.

Wagner wouldn't get a chance as LIU kept the ball in their zone for the remainder of the match in picking up the win.

Barone led the way for the Green & White with three shots while Fitzsimmons added two shots attempts on the afternoon. Five different Seahawks had a shot on goal (Mya Donnelly, Barone, Fitzsimmons, Lindsay Weiss, and Clark).

Beck was credited with seven saves on the afternoon while her counterpart, DeTreux, made four stops.

Wagner will hit the road on Saturday, October 26, as they head to Emmitsburg, MD to square off against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at 7:00 p.m.
