Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to the Iona College Gaels, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-4-0 on the season while Iona improves to 2-4-0 on the year.

The Green & White outshot the visitors, 9-7, and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks during a scoreless first half. Senior Katie Viscardi stopped four of her game-high six saves in the first stanza, with one coming in the 14th minute as she leaped high to on Mackenzie Meixner's free kick attempt.

Wagner had an early chance in the 11th minute as freshman Christina Bacon's header opportunity went left of the goal. Two minutes later, senior captain Peyton Beck's header off the corner kick from sophomore Julia Fitzsimmons went wide.

With three minutes left in the first half, freshman Luisa Barone had a chance off the corner as fellow classmate, Gabby Cipriano, crossed the ball into the box that Barone was able to put a foot on, but her shot was deflected out of bounds by a Gael defender.

When play resumed for the second half, Iona broke the 0-0 stalemate when Meixner booted a 35-yard free kick, similar to her chance back in the first half, that sailed just past the outstretched reach of Viscardi to put Iona on the board first.

The Green & White had a pair of chances in as sophomore Mattea Reale had her first attempt blocked inside the box and following a corner kick from junior captain, Maria Nunez, the second sailed high over the goal.

In the 62nd minute, Fitzsimmons was able to create space outside the box and fired off a shot that found the arms of Iona's Emma Havrilla. Nearly two minutes later, Nunez, had a chance but her header chance went wide of the net.

The Seahawks kept on the attack and in the 88th minute, sophomore Lindsay Weiss created a scoring chance but was denied the goal as Havrilla was able to make the save and keep Wagner off the board. The Gaels added the final tally with just seconds remaining in the contest as Faith Preziosi was able to outrun a Seahawk defender and beat Viscardi with a low-lining shot that put the game away for the visitors.

Wagner will be on the road for a pair of non-conference matches, beginning on September 9 when the Seahawks travel to Stony Brook before wrapping up the road voyage on September 13 at Hartford. The Seahawks return home to Hameline Field on September 16 as they welcome Temple University.
