Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team scored the first goal of the contest on Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights scored a trio of goals midway through the first half as the Seahawks dropped a 6-2 decision to the Knights on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
With the loss, the Green & White falls to 2-12 overall on the year and 1-5 in conference play while the Knights move into sole possession of second place in the league standings, as they improve to 6-7-3 overall and 4-1-1 in NEC action.
Wagner withstood an early offensive attack from the visiting Knights, who had chances to get the game's first goal off a pair of corners. FDU earned its third corner kick of the day as Madelyn Robbins booted the ball that found teammate, Samantha Roff, but Roff's chance was punched away by Seahawk senior goalkeeper,
Katie Viscardi. Noam Kedem of the Knights was able to locate the loose ball but her attempt sailed left of the target.
On their second offensive possession, Wagner was able to make the most of it and get on the board. Junior captain,
Maria Nunez, booted the ball from the right corner as freshman
Christina Bacon and FDU's Viktorija Miseljic battled for position, with the ball deflecting off the head of Miseljic in giving Wagner the early 1-0 lead.
FDU responded quickly, as Sofia Albertsson was able to find the back of the net in the 22nd minute in tying the match at 1-1. Three minutes later, the Knights broke the tie as Madelyn Robbins was able to find Miseljic, who got one past Viscardi to the lower right corner in giving FDU a 2-1 lead.
The visitors earned another corner kick with Robbins able to locate Albertsson, who sent a blast into the top of the net for her second tally of the contest which increased Fairleigh Dickinson's lead to 3-1 in the 26th minute.
Following a foul called on the Knights, Nunez stepped up for the free kick, from approximately 30 yards out, and the East Greenwich, RI native sent a ball that was grabbed by FDU's goalkeeper, Amanda Fitzgerald. Nunez had a second chance, this time from a bit closer, but Fitzgerald made the diving stop to her left.
Wagner had a few chances early on the in the second half but both attempts were blocked by a Knight defender. FDU's Elma Kolenovic almost got the Knights' fourth goal of the match but her chance was denied by junior netminder,
Delaney Beck, who started the second of action.
Beck nearly cut the deficit to a one as her free kick from 33-yards out sailed high over the goal. On their next possession, FDU upped its lead to three, 4-1, as Robbins received the pass from Albertsson and lined a shot past Delaney.
The Seahawks continued to battle back in the contest and was rewarded in the 67th minute. Beck took her second free kick of the contest with this one finding Nunez, who headed the ball past a leaping Fitzgerald as the lead was cut in half, 4-2.
The Green & White were held without another scoring chance as FDU added two more scores to secure the victory. For the match, Viscardi was credited with four saves, increasing her career total to 182 while Beck made two stops and earned her first collegiate assist.
Nunez was credited with three shots on goal while earning three points in the match (1 goal, 1 assist). Fellow captain,
Peyton Beck, sophomore
Taylor Wasserman and Bacon each posted a shot in the contest.
Wagner will conclude the non-conference portion of its season on Friday, October 19, as the Seahawks will play host to the Delaware State University Lady Hornets under-the-lights of Hameline Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
