Smithfield, RI – The defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champion Wagner women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but top-seeded Bryant answered with a 5-0 run and went on to post a 16-7 win as the Bulldogs earn the league's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Championships.
After graduating 10 seniors from their 2016 NEC title team, the Seahawks, under second-year head coach
Katie Rowan, closed the 2017 campaign by winning four of their final five regular season games in earning the No. 3 seed in the NEC Tournament. On Friday, Wagner knocked off No. 2 seed Robert Morris, 12-10, and got off to a great start today but Bryant proved to be too much as the Bulldogs earn their third NCAA berth in the last four years.
With the win, Bryant enter the NCAA's with a 13-4 record while the Seahawks finish the 2017 campaign with a mark of 7-12.
Senior co-captain
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) capped her sensational career with a hat trick while All-NEC Second-Team sophomore attacker
Anna Belle Reilly (Paradise Valley, AZ / Notre Dame Prep) added two goals for the Seahawks. Also finding the net for Wagner were junior midfielder
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ / Verona) and freshman attacker
Talia Bouzakis (Mullica Hill, NJ / Clearview Regional). Sophomore defender
Madeline Courtney (Columbia, MD / Marriots Ridge) paced the Green & White in caused turnovers with four.
In her final game as a Seahawk, defender
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township, NJ), a 2017 First-Team All-NEC choice after earning Second-Team honors in each of the last two seasons, had another across the board productive day. The senior, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Seahawks with four draw controls, tied for team-high honors with four groundballs, in addition to coming up with one caused turnover.
Bryant's 5-0 run was part of a 7-1 spree that carried the Bulldogs to an 8-5 halftime lead. The Bulldogs then opened the second half with three unanswered goals to go up 11-5 and never looked back.
For Bryant, Caitlin Breglia led all scorers with four goals while Jess DeMeo and Emily Columbus added three goals apiece. In goal, Samantha Santeramo delivered a top performance, coming up with 17 saves between the pipes in earning the win.
Statistically, the Seahawks outshot Bryant 36-25 and held a 15-10 edge in draw controls while the teams were tied 15-15 in groundballs. The Bulldogs, however, took full advantage on their free position shot opportunities, sinking 7-of-9 of their FPS chances while the Seahawks were just 1-of-4 in this category.
Junior
Kelsey Fee (White Plains, NY / White Plains / Ithaca) recorded five saves in 47:58 of action while junior
Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD / Notre Dame Preparatory) saw 12:02 of action early in the second half.
