Wagner Holds Off Quinnipiac 3-1 In Game One

May 3, 2008

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - Wagner scored three runs in the first inning then held off numerous Quinnipiac threats in the first game of today's doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Green & White improve to 20-22 and 11-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bobcats fall to 11-29 and 5-13 in the NEC.

Quinnipiac took the early lead with a run in the top of the first on the strength of three-straight two-out hits.

The Seahawks scored their three runs on just four hits, all of which came in the first inning, while the Bobcats recorded eight hits but stranded 10 runners compared to just one for the Green & White.

Wagner took the lead right back in the bottom of the first with three runs on four hits. Freshman Seth Boyd's (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) two-out double brought around sophomore Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold), who had singled to lead off the inning. Classmate Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) and junior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) followed with RBI singles to extend the lead out to 3-1. Instrumental in Wagner's big first inning were stolen bases from Csakai and McDonnell that allowed each runner to get in scoring position.

The Bobcats would threaten in the top of the second, loading the bases on an error and two hits with no outs. Senior LHP Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) squashed that rally by striking out the next two batters before coaxing an inning-ending ground out.

In the fourth, Quinnipiac again had runners at second-and-third with one out but Testa struck out Anes Koummal for the second time and Ben Farina for the third time to extinguish the rally.

McDonnell helped Testa out in the fifth with a sliding catch in right field as Wagner escaped another bases-loaded jam.

Junior Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) entered in the seventh and hurled a scoreless inning of relief and in the process picked up his school-record eighth save of the year, after tying Chris Pariseau's former mark yesterday.

Testa improved to 6-4, striking out six while yielding one run on eight hits over 6.0 innings of work.

Tyler Brett (3-5) took the loss, striking out four while yielding three runs on four hits over 6.0 innings of work. He did not allow a hit over his final 5.0 innings of work while facing the minimum 15 batters.
