May 18, 2008

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - Sacred Heart concluded its season with an 11-5 win over Wagner at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in the fourth and final game of this weekend's series. The Seahawks enter the Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament with a 27-26 record and a 17-11 NEC ledger while the Pioneers conclude their season with a 12-41 record, including 10-18 during conference-play.

The contest was halted after seven innings due to inclement weather. Despite the loss, Wagner secured the No. 3 seed in the NEC Tournament and will square off with No. 2 Central Connecticut at 3:30 pm on Thursday in Atlantic City, NJ.

Sophomore Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) tied former Atlanta Braves' farmhand Joe Francisco's Wagner single-season stolen-base mark of 33 with his second swipe of the game. The speedy centerfielder had a productive game reaching base safely all four times, including twice on walks and two more times when he was hit by a pitch. Csakai parlayed those four free passes into two runs.

After being held to just five runs over the first three games on the weekend, Sacred Heart erupted for 11 runs on 16 hits while Wagner scored just five runs on seven hits.

Eight of nine regulars hit safely for the Pioneers with six going for multiple-hits. Tyler Santos and Phil Tantillo each went 3-5 with three RBI while JJ Edwards also was 3-5 to lead the way for Sacred Heart.

Matt Fitton improved to 3-7 with the win. Fitton struck out two while yielding five runs on six hits over 5.2 innings of work.

Sophomore RHP Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) was saddled with the loss, striking out three over 3.0 innings while yielding six runs, four earned.

Wagner concluded its first season of play at Richmond County Bank Ballpark with a stellar 15-7 mark.

Prior to today's games the Green & White honored seniors Chris Marino (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial), Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) and Mike Tuozzo (Holmdel, NJ / Holmdel).
