New Britain, CT - Central Connecticut (22-20; 16-7 NEC) scored four runs in the bottom of the 10th to squeeze out a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Wagner (23-24; 14-9) in the first game of today's doubleheader at Beehive Field.
In the top of the 10th inning, sophomore Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) walked with one out. Junior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) moved him over to second with a bloop-hit over the first baseman's head. Sophomore Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) delivered a run-scoring single on a 3-2 pitch to give Wagner the 2-1 lead. After a pitching-change, classmate Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) plated Drechsel with a RBI-single of his own. Freshman Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) concluded the scoring with Wagner's fourth-straight hit, a RBI-single, scoring Avella and making it 4-1 Wagner.
The Green & White but were done in by four runs and five hits in Blue Devils' half of the 10th, capped by Sean Parker's game-winning RBI-single to left-center.
Junior RHP Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) took the loss, yielding four runs while striking out two over 1.2 innings of work. Chris Chagnon evened his record at 2-2, working two-thirds of an inning.
CCSU took the early 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Sean Allaire doubled down the left-field line. After stealing third , Allaire was brought around on Anthony Scialdone's RBI ground-out.
The Seahawks tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally. Csakai singled to left field. After collecting his fifth stolen base of the weekend, without a throw, Drechsel brought him home with a RBI-double to left-center.
Andy Wells (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) settled in after allowing a lead-off double in the first, allowing just three more hits, including two of the infield variety, over the next 7.0 innings. For the day, he struck out five and walked just one. The junior-righty also induced the Blue Devils into three 1-2-3 innings while facing more then four batters in just one inning. In 18.0 innings spanning his last three outings, Wells has struck out 13 while yielding just two runs and three walks.
Wagner threatened in the top of the eighth as Csakai recorded his second hit of the game to lead off the inning. With Csakai moving on the next pitch, Drechsel dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt. On the designed play, Csakai tried to get third but was thrown out by the first baseman when the catcher covered third.
The Blue Devils loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Huebner entered and struck out pinch-hitter Sean Connors on just three pitches to end the rally.
CCSU again threatened with a pair of runners in the bottom of the ninth only to see Huebner induce a strikeout and a pop-up to escape the jam.
Blue Devil starter Matt Gianini struck out four and gave up one run on six hits and two walks over 9.0 innings of work in taking the no-decision.
Drechsel was a perfect 3-3 with a run, RBI and a double while Csakai hit safely for the seventh-straight game, going 2-4 with two runs, a stolen base and a walk to lead the Wagner offense. Avella also recorded multiple-hits for a team-leading 14th-time this year.
