Men's Lax Drops Season Finale at Holy Cross, 13-5

April 29, 2008

Final Stats

Worcester, MA - Freshman attackman Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor) notched two scores to finish the season as the team-leader in goals but Wagner fell to Patriot League member Holy Cross 13-5 in the Seahawks' season finale.

Macumber, a talented 5-11, 190-pound athlete with a knack for finding the net, figures to be a big part of Wagner's future as he wound up with a team-high 18 goals on the season. Along with one assist, his 19 points were second on the team to junior midfielder Jeff Policicchio, who led the Seahawks with 26 points on 16 goals and 10 assists.

Policicchio scored a goal vs. the Crusaders as did senior midfielder Mike Hess (Potomac, MD/ The Heights School) while senior midfielder Ryan Martin (Florham Park, NJ/ Bayley Ellard) added an assist.

This marked the final game in the careers of seniors Hess, Martin, attackman Andrew Daly (Jamesville, NY/ Jamesville-DeWitt) along with defensemen Drew Mueller (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) and Scott Leung (Staten Island, NY/ Tottenville).

While Wagner (0-15, 0-8) will miss the contributions of these five loyal and determined seniors, the Seahawks in 2009 will return their five leading scorers and both goalies. In addition to several key veterans, head coach Jason Rife will have at his disposal a deep and talented recruiting class that he and assistant coach Bryan Molk have enthusiastically attracted to Grymes Hill.

Sophomore goalie Matthew McVie (Westbury, NY/ L.I. Lutheran), making his fifth consecutive start, had 12 saves during the first 49 minutes of the game. Junior goalie Brandon Waszak (Frederick, MD/ Linganore) recorded one save in 5:07 of action in the fourth quarter while sophomore Michael Gutkin (Freehold, NJ/ Freehold Township) saw his first action of the season, playing the final 5:46.

Holy Cross (5-9) jumped put to a 5-0 lead after one quarter and increased the lead to 9-0 at halftime. Colin Flood led the way for the Crusaders with three goals. Holy Cross out-shot Wagner 31-21, led in ground balls 39-28 while the teams were even in the faceoff department with both squads winning 11-of-22.
