Poughkeepsie, NY - The Wagner water polo team dropped their first round game of the MAAC Tournament to the Iona Gaels 14-10. Wagner will now play in the tournament consolation game Sunday, April 27th at 12:00 PM.
Iona jumped on the board fast with a quick goal within the first minute of play. The Seahawks were able to counter with goals from junior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) and senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego HS) but could not stop the Gales who scored two more before the quarters' end to go up 3-2.
In the second, Hoelck came charging and netted her second goal with 6:50 on the clock after freshman goalie Kristen Spector (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) stoned a Gaels' shot and sent the ball the length of the pool to Wagner's top scorer. Junior Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) then scored her first of the game with 6:03 left in the half off of a Hoelck pass to give Wagner their first lead of the game 4-3. But for the rest of the half it was all Iona as they scored five goals while the Seahawks were only able to put one more on the scoreboard from the hands of freshman Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area).
The start of the third period did not fair well for the Green & White with Iona scoring twice. Senior Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC) contributed her first of two goals with 4:10 left in the quarter with Hoelck netting two more. Iona was able to score one more before the end of the third to lead 11-8.
It was Rodgers and Hoelck again in the fourth to score Wagner's only two goals while the Gaels put three into the net, closing out the game 14-10 and ending the Seahawks' chances of making it back-to-back appearances in the MAAC Championship game.
Hoelck led the Seahawks with five goals and three assists. Rodgers ended the game with two goals and four steals while Maichrowicz, Pyrz, and Tomlinson each had one goal in the game. Senior Amber McMichael (Reading Pa/Governor Mifflin) dished out two assists while Spector saved six.
Iona used their man man-up opportunities to put the Seahawks away as they went 4-5 with their offensive advantages. Junior Lauren Peterson led the Gaels in scoring with four goals, all coming in the first half.
With her fifth goal, Hoelck notched her 106th goal for the season, setting a new Wagner season record.
One more game remains for the Seahawks as they take on the Siena Saints. Siena lost to Marist in game two on Saturday in an overtime battle 11-9. The consolation game begins at 12:00 PM on Sunday, April 27th in Poughkeepsie, NY.
