Testa's Two-Hit Shutout Leads Wagner To 5-0 Game-One Win

Emmitsburg, MD - Senior Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) struck out nine while yielding just two hits over 7.0 shutout innings in Wagner's 5-0 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Green & White batted around in the third, plating four runs in moving to 17-20 and 8-6 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Mount falls to 11-24 and 7-6 in the NEC.

Today's game marked the third-straight start that Testa has not allowed a earned run while extending his scoreless inning streak to 24.2 innings. The lefty flamethrower, who entered this weekend 21st nationally in ERA, leads the Green & White in wins (5), strikeouts (59), innings pitched (62.1), complete games (3) and opposing batting average (.184) also lowered his ERA to a NEC-best 1.73. During NEC play, he has a 3-1 record with a sparkling 0.67 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 27.0 innings.

With his 17th career win, Testa moves into a tie with former teammate Mike McTamney for third place on the all-time Wagner career list. The hard-throwing lefty, who moved his school-record strikeout total to 287, also set a school-record with his 40th career start, while picking up his 13th career complete game and his third career shutout.

Wagner struck for four runs in the top of the third. With one out, sophomore Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) and Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) were hit by pitches. Freshman Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) then battled back from a 0-2 count to draw a walk and load the bases. Sophomore Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring the speedy Conforti. Junior Chris Drechsel (Craford, NJ / Cranford) reloaded the bases with a walk while chasing Mount starter Marshall Thomson. Freshman Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) greeted Jimmy Mudgett with a two-run single to left-center. Sophomore Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) concluded the scoring with a first-pitch RBI single to left-center, making it 4-0 Wagner.

The Green & White would add an insurance run in the seventh. McDonnell doubled to left-center before Drechsel fought off a 0-2 pitch through the left-side for a run-scoring single to put Wagner in front 5-0

Lucas went 2-3 with two RBI to lead the Seahawk-offense, which recorded six hits and six walks.

Thomason yielded four runs over 2.2 innings in falling to 2-4 on the year.
