Stats
Easton, PA - Sophomore hurler Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) threw a magnificent four hit shutout in the second game and junior infielder Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/Wooster) hit another homerun - this one a milestone - in the first game to lead the Wagner College softball team to wins in both games of a doubleheader against Lafayette College this afternoon 4-2 and 8-0, respectively.
In the opening game the Green & White got out of a tight situation to nail down victory.
With the bases loaded and the tying run in scoring position sophomore pitcher Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen) got out of the one out jam beautifully by first inducing a fly ball out to center and then getting the final batter of the game to ground out to the shortstop on a nice play by senior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV/Wooster) where she had to make a strong throw to get the runner.
Eshelman now moves to 8-4 on the year with the win - which now leads the team - throwing all seven innings giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking three.
History was made in the top of the fifth inning when Lazzari homered to left field making her the first Seahawk softball player in history to tally 50 RBI in a single season. The reigning Northeast Conference "Player of the Week" also increased her team-best batting average to .434 after the day with a base hit to right-center to go along with her four-bagger.
The Reno native now stands just two more homeruns away from tying that Seahawk single-season record (12) and four hits away from the mark for hits in a season (60).
Wagner took a two-run lead without hesitation in the top of the first inning when freshman outfielder Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV/Reno) doubled driving in Emily Pierce for the first run. The second run was scored when junior designated player Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) singled in Lazzari for an RBI.
Pierce had a day on the diamond for the Seahawks notching those four base hits but also driving in a run in the fourth inning on a base hit through the left side that scored senior outfielder Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) for the third Wagner score setting up Lazzari's solo-blast in the following stanza.
As for the second game it was all Danielle Wagoner and the Seahawk bats.
The California native was virtually unhittable in the circle today against the Leopard lineup as she surrendered no runs on just four hits while walking no one and striking out two.
The sophomore's first career complete game blanking of an opponent was coupled beautifully with Wagner's ability to crush the Leopard pitching as they romped Lafayette for 15 hits highlighted by Katie Stevens' pair of RBI after going two-for-three and raising her season batting average to an impressive .419
Junior outfielder Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ/Old Tappan) also drove in a pair of runs on a seventh-inning base hit to right field that made the final score of 8-0.
The Seahawks now improve to a record of 25-16 overall on the year and get right back on the road tomorrow to take on Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
