Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team battled MAAC rival Saint Joseph's to the wire in a defensive-mined contest before coming up on the short end of a 9-4 decision.
It was Senior Day on Grymes Hill and five seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony as the Seahawks will conclude the 2008 season with three consecutive road games.
The five Seahawk seniors who donned the home white uniforms for the final time were attackman Andrew Daly (Jamesville, NY/ Jamesville-DeWitt), midfielders Sean Hess (Potomac, MD. The Heights school) and Ryan Martin (Florham Park, NJ/ Bayley Ellard), along with defensemen Drew Mueller (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) and Scott Leung (Staten Island, NY/ Tottenville).
The Hawks took a 2-0 late into the first quarter before sophomore midfielder Sean Travis (Calverton, NY/ Riverhead) put the Seahawks on the board with an unassisted goal at the 1:56 mark of the opening quarter to slice the deficit to 2-1. The Hawks then reeled off the next three goals of the half to take a 4-1 halftime lead.
After Saint Joseph's scored the opening tally of the second to build a 5-1 lead, Hess found the net with 12:14 left in the third quarter to make it 5-2. That's the way the score remained until the 1:30 mark of the third when freshman attackman Will MacCumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South) notched the first of his two goals, off an assist by junior attackman Jeff Policicchio (Novi, MI/ Novi) drew the Seahawks to within 5-3.
Sean Evans scored 1:06 into the fourth quarter for the Hawks to give Saint Joseph's a 6-3 lead but the scrappy Seahawks made it 6-4 with 7:45 left in the game as Policicchio once again assisted on a MacCumber goal. The Hawks then went on a three-goal splurge over the final 4:25 of the game to put the game out of reach, the latter two goals coming on breakaways when Wagner was pressing and trying to force the action.
Scott Cullinan paced the Saint Joe offense with four goals while Erik Hoatling had 15 saves in goal. MacCumber led Wagner with two goals while Hess and Travis had one goal apiece. Sophomore goalie Matt McVie (Westbury, NY/ L.I. Lutheran) made his second consecutive start and turned in yet another strong outing, recording 13 saves, including several spectacular stops.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 0-12 on the season, 0-6 in the MAAC while Saint Joseph's improved to 4-9, 4-3 in the MAAC.
Wagner is next in action on Wed., April 23 when the Seahawks travel to Providence to meet the Friars in a 7:00 pm faceoff.
