Jersey City, NJ - The Seahawks came back from three runs down in the seventh to win the second game 6-5 in a nonconference doubleheader sweep of the Peahens of Saint Peter's at Jaroschak Field this afternoon after winning the first game, 5-1. The Seahawks improve their record to 20-15 overall on the year and push their winning streak to six games.
Down to their final out in the top of the seventh senior catcher Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, NJ/Huntington Beach) came up with a clutch single up the middle driving in freshman outfielder Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV/Reno) to tie the game up at five runs apiece after Emily Pierce drove in the first run of the inning with a single down the left field line.
The Seahawks would take the lead after the Batistelli RBI on a misplay by the Peahens when their catcher couldn't find the pitcher's glove on a routine throw back to the mound. Senior shortstop Katie Stevens (Reno, NV/Wooster) - who reached base on a single to short - took advantage of the throwing error and slid into home safely for the go-ahead run.
That run would stick as sophomore pitcher Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) took over for senior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and got the final out on a groundball to short, solidifying the first save of her career.
Four separate arms were utilized in the comeback win by Wagner Head Coach Glen Payne, Wagoner, Iwicki, freshman Heather Ochoa (Los Angeles, CA/Notre Dame) and sophomore Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen) who started the game but failed to record an out in the bottom of the first before she was relieved.
Iwicki was the pitcher of record for the Seahawks and earned the third victory of her career. In two and two-thirds innings she gave up only one earned run on four hits, striking out one and walking one. She's now 3-1 on the season.
In the first game of the double dip a Green & White comeback was never on the menu.
It was never needed.
With a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning senior first baseman Margaret Gallia (Las Vegas, NV/Community College HS) blasted a homerun to left field with two runners on to give the Seahawks the 5-1 advantage they would eventually ride to victory.
Wagner got its first two runs on an RBI single from junior designated player Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) in the top of the second and the first homerun of Hailey Corthell's career collegiate career in the following inning.
In the circle, starter Kate Eshelman and Danielle Wagoner combined for a six-hitter over seven innings. Wagoner earned the victory and moves to 6-3 after going four and two-thirds inning giving up no runs and only one hit while striking out three and walking no one.
The Seahawks now gear up for a big home Northeast Conference weekend with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. First up is Fairleigh Dickinson University on Saturday, first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
