Wagner Drops 12-4 Men's Lacrosse Decision at Manhattan

Riverdale, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team was tripped up at Manhattan College by the score of 12-4 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) contest.

Wagner will now focus its energies on a Senior Day match-up vs. Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 1:00 pm when five Seahawks - Scott Leung, Ryan Martin, Andrew Daly, Mike Hess and Drew Mueller - will play their final home games at Wagner College Stadium. Wagner will conclude the 2008 campaign with road matches vs. Providence (April 23), Marist (April 26) and Holy Cross (April 29).

With the loss to Manhattan, Wagner falls to 0-11, 0-5 in the MAAC while the Jaspers improved to 4-7, 3-2 in league play.

Marc LaBelle and Michael Llewellyn scored two goals each for Manhattan, which got out to a quick start, putting up four goals in the first quarter. Angelo Marrano scored his first of the game 2:03 into the game to make it 1-0 followed by a Llewellyn tally at the 6:07 mark of the first quarter which made it a 2-0 game. Freshman Will Coursen then scored consecutive goals, the latter coming with just 1.5 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The lead grew to 6-0 before Wagner got on the board via a goal by junior attackman Jeff Policicchio (Novi, MI/ Novi) off an assist from junior midfielder Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) with 10:18 left in the half. The Jaspers would score three more times in the first half in taking a 9-1 lead into intermission.

Wagner opened the second half with an unassisted goal by freshman attackman Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor). Junior attackman Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comsewogue) and senior midfielder Ryan Martin (Florham Park, NJ/ Bayley Ellard) added second half goals for the Seahawks, the latter goal drawing Wagner to within 11-4 with 14:40 left to play. The teams played on virtually even terms the rest of the way, each finishing with one goal in the final quarter.

Manhattan out-shot Wagner 41-18 and led in ground balls by a narrow 31-29 margin while Wagner won 10-of-19 faceoffs. Goalie John Geagan held the Jasper defense strong with eight saves off of 18 shots.

Sophomore goalie Matthew McVie (Westbury, NY/ L.I. Lutheran) gained his first start of the season in goal and recorded nine saves.
