April 15, 2008

Final Stats

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's lacrosse demonstrated plenty of offensive firepower led by junior midfielder Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA)/ Plymouth Whitemarsh) who had four goals and two assists, but it was not enough as Bucknell out-lasted the Seahawks 19-13.

Bucknell, which is a member of the Patriot League, evened its record at 6-6 with the win while the Seahawks, who were coming off a win at Central Connecticut State on Sunday, fell to 2-11.

Wagner could not find a way to slow down Bucknell's sensational sophomore attacker Carol Donahue who recorded 13 points on the strength of five goals and eight assists. Donahue had a hand in the first five Bison goals of the game, scoring one and assisting on four others as Bucknell surged to an early 5-1 lead. Wagner answered with goals by junior midfielder Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) and Blundin to draw within two goals at 5-3.

Bucknell built the lead back up to 7-4 before Wagner strung together another two-goal run on scores by freshman midfielder Carly Lyster (Oakhurst, NJ/ Ocean Township) and freshman attacker Karen Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY/ Skaneateles) to again make it a one-goal game at 7-6. The Bison then ran off seven answered goals in building a commanding 14-6 halftime lead.

Wagner whittled the deficit to five goals on two occasions in the second half, at 14-9 off another Vitkus tally with 24:44 remaining, and again at 18-13 when Marchitelli notched her second goal with 2:02 left to play. Wagner out-scored Bucknell 7-5 in the second half.

Marchitelli finished with two goals and two assists, Gonzalez had two goals and one assist while Vitkus finished with two goals. Also finding the net for Wagner with one goal apiece were Lyster, sophomore midfielder Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/ Cheshire) and junior midfielder Lindsay Hashmall (Wantagh, NY/ Wantagh). Sophomore midfielder Teri Noll (Jordan, NY/ Jordan-Elbridge Central) handed out two assists.

For Bucknell, Julia Braun and Chelsea Peters complemented Donahue's outstanding day by scoring four and three goals, respectively. Bucknell out-shot Wagner 35-29 and held a 20-14 edge in draw controls but the scrappy Seahawks won the ground ball battle, 28-21. Junior goalie Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) had 12 saves for the Seahawks while Alyssa DeLorenz stopped 10 shots for the Bison.

Wagner returns to NEC play on Friday when the Seahawks travel to Monmouth for a 4:00 pm contest.
