West Long Branch, NJ - Senior catcher Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) drove in three runs on a two-run homer and an RBI single that came in a six-run fifth inning capped by a base-clearing three RBI double off the bat of junior designated player Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) that catapulted the Seahawks to a 11-7 victory in the opening game of an Northeast Conference doubleheader against Monmouth University. Wagner improves to 15-15 overall, 4-5 now in the NEC.
In a curious turn of events in the circle for the Seahawks, sophomore starter Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen) left the game in the third with no one out and the score knotted at three only to return to earn the save (the first in her career) in the bottom of the seventh with the Green & White leading by four runs, 11-7. In her staccato appearance she gave up an earned run on four hits while walking four in two and two-thirds innings.
Sophomore Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) and freshman Heather Ochoa (Los Angeles, CA/Notre Dame) - who made her first start at third base - relieved Eshelman before her return, giving up a combined three earned on eight hits in four and a third innings.
Senior shortstop Katie Stevens (Reno, NV/Wooster) joined the offensive onslaught with her first homerun of the 2008 season in the top of the sixth, a two-run job that gave Wagner their eleventh and final run of the contest.
Also getting into the fun at the plate was Seahawk junior infielder Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/Wooster) who wound up two-for-four with a pair of RBI. She now has 32 on the year, one behind Batistelli who leads the team with 33.
Wagoner was the pitcher of record earning the victory and improving to 4-3 in 2008.
The Seahawks now wait for the start of the final game of the double dip. Stay tuned to www.wagnerathletics.com for all the scores and updates.
