Seahawks' Winning Streak Moves To Five With Win Over Siena 4-0 Before It Snaps Against Cornell 8-6 In Final Game Of Florida Swing

March 22, 2008

Stats

Orlando, FL - Cornell's six-run third inning overcame a five-run Wagner lead and wound up the difference in a game that snapped the Seahawks' six-game winning streak 8-6 after they beat the Siena Saints for the second time in a week, 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. In that game sophomore pitcher Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen) improved to 2-3 on the year while the Seahawks moved to 8-9 overall after the day's end.

In the first game the Seahawks scored a run apiece in the first three stanzas to give themselves a comfortable three-run cushion that would turn into four runs in the bottom of the fifth on senior shortstop Katie Stevens' (Reno, NV/Wooster) sacrifice fly to right that drove in freshman lead-off hitter Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) who reached on a bunt single.

Kate Eshelman would nail down the victory by shutting out the Saints holding them to only four hits, walking none and striking out four. It was her second shutout of the season and ninth of career after seven last year, her rookie season.

In the second game it was a crucial third inning that propelled the Big Red of Cornell University (13-6) to a win over the Seahawks.

In that bottom home half Cornell's first baseman Ashley Garvey got the rally going with a one-out two-RBI single followed by another base hit the next batter up that drove in another two runs. With a runner on sophomore hurler Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) relieved Seahawk freshman starter Heather Ochoa (Los Angeles, CA/Notre Dame) but quickly gave up a base hit followed by a run-scoring double before getting out of the inning with Cornell holding a 6-5 advantage of which they would never relinquish.

Ochoa was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs - all earned - on eight hits while walking a batter. She moved to 4-2 on the year.
