Seahawks Take Third at ECAC Championships

Lewisburg, PA - Senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego,CA/University of San Diego HS) and the Seahawk offense battled their way to a third place finish in the ECAC Championships held at Bucknell University. Wagner went 2-1 in the tournament.

In the first game, Hoelck led the way to the 16-9 victory over Mercyhurst with five goals and three assists. Juniors Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) and Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) chipped in with four and three goals respectively. Other Seahawk scorers in the first game include seniors Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Rio Hondo) and Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC), junior Dru Murphy (Keller, TX/Slippery Rock) and freshman Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Mifflin), all scoring one goal a piece.

The second game saw the Seahawks battling host Bucknell for the second time of the 2008 season. Unfortunately, the outcome was the same as the first meeting, losing to the Bison 17-11. Hoelck and Maichrowicz were the top Wagner goal scorers with Hoelck netting five while Maichrowicz found the back of the net three times. Giles tallied another goal as senior Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) and freshman Laura vanderBent (Shillington, PA/Mifflin) got on the board for the first time of the tournament, each netting one.

The third match up brought the Seahawks face to face with another foe whom Wagner has lost to this season. In their first meeting, the Seahawks fell to the hands of Harvard University 14-13. This time around, history was not be repeated. Wagner overtook the Crimson 14-6 on the shoulders of Hoelck who found the back of the net four times, ending the tournament with a total of 14 goals. Viramontes and freshmen vanderBent and Alexandra Melia (Henderson, NV/Coronado) were able to put in two with Melia's goals being the first of her collegiate career. Karimzad, Maichrowicz and Giles also chipped in a goal a piece in the Seahawks third win of the year.

Freshman goalie Kristen Spector (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) is finding more comfort in net as her experience builds as she nabbed a total of 19 saves in the tournament, 10 of which came against Harvard, tying her season best.

With the two wins and one loss, the Seahawks finished third in the tournament, two places better than the fifth place seed they received prior to arriving.

Wagner now takes a lengthy break from competition and will return to the pool in a week of west coast action, beginning with four games in the Claremont Convergence on March 15-16 in Claremont, CA.
