College Park, MD - A second-half offensive surge along with a key overtime defensive effort helped the Wagner water polo team defeat George Washington University 12-11 for the Seahawks first win of the 2008 season.

Out of the gate, the Seahawks struggled to find the back of the net, falling behind 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Wagner still could not seem to put the pieces together and entered halftime trailing 7-3. But it was in the second half that the Seahawks brought the pressure, scoring four uncontested goals and tying the game 7-7 to end the third quarter. The final stanza of regulation ended in a deadlock with each team scoring three times, sending the game into overtime with a score of 10-10. In the end, the Seahawks were able to overtake with Colonials with two overtime goals to their one, winning the game 12-11.

Senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego HS) led the way with four goals and one assist while Wagner welcomed back junior Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) and her three goals and one assist in her first game of the 2008 season. Senior Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) also chipped in, netting three. Rounding out the scoring for the Seahawks are seniors Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello) and Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo), each finding the back of the net once during the match.

It was not just the offense that aided Wagner in victory as freshman goalie Kristen Spector (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) saved 10 and stole four in route to her first collegiate win. The Green & White also tallied 17 steals while only turning the ball over four times throughout the game.

The Seahawks will battle Bucknell University for the second game of the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday, February 23rd at 6:00 PM.
