Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College Women's Soccer team won a non-conference game against the Highlanders of the New Jersey Institute of Technology this afternoon at Wagner College Stadium, 2-1. The Seahawks improve to a record of (2-6-1, 0-0-0 NEC) on the year.
The Seahawks landed the first blow of the game when sophomore forward Brooke Keany (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) found fellow sophomore midfielder Dominique Bonura (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) for her first goal of her career with 8:59 gone by in the contest.
Wagner secured the 1-0 advantage until the 69th minute when Highlander forward Xiomara Medina put a ball past Seahawk freshman goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) to knot everything up at one.
Both teams remained in a deadlock until the 73rd minute when freshman defender Whitney Prindible (Hockessin, DE/St. Marks) found junior captain Stephanie Burnett (Cocoa Beach, FL/Satellite) for the game-winning goal on a header off a corner kick.
The goal was the first of the season for Burnett and a team-leading third assist of the year for the freshman Prindible.
Schueschner was solid in goal once again for the Seahawks as she finished with three saves while playing all 90 minutes.
As for the stat sheet, Wagner won the battle of both shots (10-8) and corner kicks (6-5).
Both teams had 11 fouls on the afternoon.
The Seahawks are off until this Friday when they travel down to Emmitsburg, Maryland to open up their Northeast Conference schedule against the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
