Seahawks Can't Hold Early Lead To Navy As They Fall, 3-1

Sept. 20, 2007

Box Score

Annapolis, MD - The Wagner College Women's Soccer team couldn't hold onto an early 1-0 advantage that they took into the second half as they succumbed to a strong Navy (4-2-2) offense in the end, 3-1. The Seahawks move to a record of (1-4-1, 0-0-0 NEC) on the year.

It only took about eight minutes for the Seahawks to get on the board under the lights at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Off their only corner kick of the game (Navy ended with six) freshman defender Whitney Prindible (Hockessin, DE/St. Marks) found fellow freshman Ashley Rastello (Mid., Manorville, NY/Eastport-Southmanor) for a header past Midshipmen goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes for her first collegiate goal.

Sharp defense - lead by junior standout Stephanie Burnett (Cocoa Beach, FL/Satellite) - and gutty goaltending by freshman Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) - who finished the game with eight saves - stifled a potent Navy offense into the second half to preserve the lead despite weathering 25 shots to their three.

Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the strong preservation of the lead cracked in the 63rd minute and the floodgates ensued. Navy - ranked in many preseason Top 25 polls - tied the game on a Julie Reynolds goal at 63:16 and then took the lead only 13 minutes later when Brittany White found the back of the net off a charge down the middle of the field.

Less than two minutes later the home team put the game out of the Seahawks' reach when they scored off a thirty-yard bomb of a boot from Elise McCaskey at 78:21.

Wagner looks to bounce back when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. this Saturday to take on the Drexel University Dragons at 1 p.m.
