West Long Branch, NJ --Wagner College Track and Field wrapped up competition on Day One of the NEC Championships held at Monmouth University earlier today. The opening day saw the men in ninth place with eight points and the women in seventh place with 14 points.
For the men their day was highlighted by redshirt sophomore Stefano Petraglia (Staten Island, NY/Msgr. Farrell/URI) unleashing a discus toss of 47.39 meters which was good for second place. Petraglia under the tutelage of throwing coach Sean Bramley qualified for the IC4As with this prestigious chuck of the discus.
Also of note was freshman Matthew Villane (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) returning to his proverbial old stomping grounds as he graduated from nearby Shore Regional and qualified for the finals of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.37. Teammate and senior Kyle Sultzer (Archbald, PA/Valley View) just missed out on points in the 10,000 meters taking ninth place with a time of 34:03.33.
Turning to the women, sophomore Alaina Alfano (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) tallied second place in the long jump with a leap of 5.61 meters. Alfano also qualified for the finals of the 100 hurdles with a second place time in her heat of 15.15. Noemie Wilson (Windsor, CO/Windsor) qualifed as well finishing right behind Alfano in that same heat at 15.29.
Sophomore Brecken Drager (Loomis, CA/Del Oro) lived to run another day as she qualified for the finals of the 1500 meters with a first place time in her heat at 4:55.76. Samantha Snukis (St. Clair, PA/Nativity BVM) did likewise in the 800 meters taking top honors in her heat at 2:18.99. Snukis was not done as she joined forces with Drager, Jenna Naglieri (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland), and Meaghan Robbins (Waymart, PA/Western Wayne) to nail down fourth place in the 4x800 relay at a time of 9:38.88.
Finally for the women on this day was junior Gwendolyn Moore (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) landing in eighth place in the javelin with a distance of 38.42.
Wagner will be back in action tomorrow as Villane, Snukis, Drager, Alfano, and Wilson compete in the finals of their various events. In addition there will be a host of other events such as the women's triple jump and the men's 3000 meter steeplechase.
