May 5, 2007

Box Score

Bridgeport, CT - Behind the pitching of NCAA ERA leader Jay Monti Sacred Heart snapped Wagner's six-game winning streak with a 9-2 win in game one of today's doubleheader at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Pioneers improve to 20-23 and 10-7 in the NEC while the Green & White falls to 14-27 and 8-10 in the NEC.

Wagner struck first for the second game in a row scoring two unearned runs off of Monti. Freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) reached on an error by the shortstop. On the next play with Csakai on the move sophomore Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) hit a ground ball to the shortstop, who elected to go to second base but was unable to corral the speedy Csakai. Sophomore Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) then moved the pair over one base with a ground out to Monti. Senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) then reached on another Pioneer error by the second baseman that allowed both runners Csakai and DiGeronimo to score and put Wagner up 2-0.

The Seahawks would get their first hit of the day in the top of the fourth inning when Mastrianni singled through the right side but was erased on the next play when Monti induced a double play.

From that point on it was all Pioneers. Jeff Hanson started off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home to left field on the first pitch he saw to cut the Wagner lead to 2-1. Sacred Heart then loaded up the bases on a single and a pair of walks. Phil Tantillo followed with a single up the middle to plate a pair of runs. After Justin Malrain reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt Wagner was forced to the pen. Steve Tedesco greeted sophomore rhp Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) with a two-run single to push the lead out to 5-2. Sacred Heart would add two more in the decisive seven-run fourth inning.

The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the sixth to push the lead out to 9-2 before Monti struck out the side in the seventh.

Wagner starter freshman rhp Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) fell to 1-4 after giving up six runs, five earned, with one strikeout in 3.0 innings of work.

Monti allowed just three singles over 7.0 innings while striking out nine against zero walks in improving to 8-2 with his seventh complete game of the season.

Also collecting hits for Wagner were Delleani and sophomore Mike Maffucci (Nutley, NJ / Nutley).

Bobby McKee went 3-4 with four RBI to lead the Pioneer offense.
