Box Score

Teaneck, NJ -- Sophomore pitcher Kristine Sawlsville (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) of Monmouth stifled the Wagner offense, carrying the third-seeded Hawks to a 3-0 victory over the second-seeded Seahawks in the second game of the Northeast Conference Softball Championship in Teaneck, NJ, on Friday afternoon.

Sawlsville held the Seahawks scoreless, allowing just two hits, while striking out six to pick up her 17th win of the season. Wagner had the first chance to score in the bottom of the first after runners reached second and third with two outs, but a groundout to the shortstop ended the threat.

The Hawks cracked the scoring column in the top of the second when senior Heather Gordon (Hatboro, PA/Mount St. Joseph) led off with a single and moved to second on a single by junior Kara O'Dell (Henderson, NV/Green Valley). She came around to score on a throwing error after sophomore Candice Palumbo (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) flew out to right field.

Monmouth tacked on a run in the fourth after three straight hits, concluded by a double from Palumbo, which drove in senior Dawn Gilchrist (Newfoundland, NJ/Jefferson) and made it 2-0.

The Hawks increased the lead in the fifth after junior Gina Mignogna (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) led off with a single and moved over on a sacrifice bunt, before scoring on a single by sophomore Nichole Alvarez (Brick, NJ/Brick Township). After loading the bases on a walk and an infield single, Wagner's senior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) escaped without further damage.

Wagner threatened in the bottom of the seventh after junior Margaret Gallia (Las Vegas, NV/Community College HS) led off with a walk. Another walk to sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) put runners on first and second with one out. Sawlsville ended the comeback threat with a strikeout and a comebacker to the circle to complete the shutout.

Miller (14-9) who became the career innings leader at Wagner was given the loss. She has now logged 653 innings in her career moving her past former Seahawks Krystle Petty ('00-'03).
