Seahawks Win Fifth Straight Game 11-5 Over NJIT

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawks scored six runs in the first two innings and never looked back in an easy 11-5 win over NJIT earlier today at Dr. Bill Willetts Field. With the win, the Green & White extends their winning streak to five while improving to 13-26 as the Highlanders fall to 10-19.

The Seahawks scored three runs in each of the first two innings before extending their lead all the way out to 11-1 as they were aided by five unearned runs on three NJIT errors.

The first three Wagner hitters, freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold), senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) and sophomore Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA), supplied the offense going 5-12 with seven RBI, five runs and four stolen bases.

The Seahawks jumped in front rather quickly as Csakai got hit be a pitch to lead off the game for Wagner. DiGeronimo then blasted his school-record and NEC-leading sixth triple of the year to make it 1-0. Delleani then brought DiGeronimo in with an infield single. Once on the base paths Delleani stole second before advancing to third on a fly out and scored on the first of senior Ed Sudol's (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) two hits to cap the three-run first inning.

Wagner would score three more runs in the second inning, highlighted by Delleani's second hit of the game, a two-run single to left field, to make it 6-0.

The Seahawks would tack on single runs in the fourth and sixth inning before adding three in the seventh inning to put the game away.

NJIT would finally break through in the eighth inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 11-5 but would get no closer.

Wagner starter freshman lhp Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY / St. John The Baptist) yielded just one walk and one hit over 4.0 scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve to 2-2 on the season. Brian Ascolese (2-3) struck out six but gave up five earned runs over 5.0 innings in taking the loss.

Also throwing scoreless innings of relief for Wagner were freshman Tom Queno (Wethersfield, CT / Wethersfield), junior Chris Marino (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) and classmate Mike Tuozzo (Holmdel, NJ / Holmdel).

Wagner returns to NEC play this weekend with a four-game set at Sacred Heart starting on Friday at 4 pm.
