Results
Paramus, NJ --The Wagner College track and field team ventured into New Jersey over the weekend to take part in the NJIT Highlander Invitational where they destroyed the rest of the field picking up 15 first place marks.
Starting with the women, the domination began early when Ashley Wetherhold (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) took first in the 100 meter dash at 13.03. The 200 meter dash saw Wagner athletes finish third through seventh as Jocelyn Ford (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), Wetherhold, Renee Darmstadt (Kingston, NY/John A. Coleman), Jessica Ford (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), and Cara Garvey (Marlborough, MA/Marian) rounded out the group with times ranging from Ford's 27.38 to Garvey's 27.87.
The 400 meter dash was built Ford tough as the twins took first and second with a time of 1:01.62 for Jessica and a time of 1:01.91 for Jocelyn. Garvey also came through at third place stopping the clocks at 1:02.95. The 800 meter run was next and Samantha Snukis (St. Clair, PA/Nativity BVM) made it two weeks in a row with a first place in that event ending in a time of 2:28.61. Sophomore Brecken Drager (Loomis, CA/Del Oro) was right behind in second place at 2:30.48.
Drager then returned with a first place in the 1500 meter run at 4:57.35 as she was competing only against teammates with the next non-Wagner finisher coming in close to 30 seconds behind. The 5000 meter run saw Ashley Mallen (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) cruise to victory at 19:30.30, while the 100 meter hurdles went to Alaina Alfano (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) at 16:00.
Snukis was back in action in the 400 hurdles taking first place at 1:07.50 while Noemie Wilson (Windsor, CO/Windsor) was not far behind in second place at 1:09.00. Alfano came back for more in the long jump picking up first place at 5.20 meters while reigning NEC rookie of the week Amanda Gland (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) took second place at 4.84 meters. Gland then took first in the triple jump with a leap of 9.99 meters which was just shy of 10 meters.
In the events that involved tossing metal objects, Ashley Simon (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion Area) was good for second in the shotput at 11.65 meters, while Gwendolyn Moore (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) launched the javelin a distance of 35.13 meters which earned her a first place.
Turning to the men it was grand day for freshman James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) as he took first in the 800 meter run at 2:02.65, and followed that up with a second place time in the 1500 meter run at 4:15.01. Mouhamed Halwani (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) took first place in the 5000 meter run at 15:46.20 and freshman Matthew Villane (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore) was good for first in the 400 meter hurdles at 57.40.
The high jump saw Philip Nelson take first place at 1.72 meters while Dan Mercorelli (North Haledon, NJ/De Paul Catholic) snatched first place in the long jump at 6.10 meters. He was followed closely by Piotr Czech (Keyport, NJ/Keyport) who took third in the long jump at 5.67 meters and then second in the triple jump at 13.28 meters. Czech then completed his day by taking part in the javelin and tossed the aforementioned javelin a distance of 41.70 meters which earned him sixth place.
Wagner has a quick turnaround as they are next in action this Wednesday when they host the highly anticipated Wagner Quad Meet starting at 4pm.
