Teaneck, NJ - The Wagner College Seahawks hit three home runs, as they belted host Fairleigh Dickinson by scores of 12-1 in five innings and 10-0 in six innings today. The sweep runs the Seahawks softball team win streak to four straight and puts them at 4-2 in the Northeast Conference and 12-12 overall. The Knights fell to 2-4 in the league and 6-16 on the season.
In the opener Wagner broke the bats out early scoring 11 runs in the second inning and never looked back. Freshman Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) hit a three run home run and junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) added a grand slam in the inning as the Seahawks sent 15 batters to the plate. The three run shot marked the first homer of Eshelman's career while Iwicki's was her first of the season. Four Wagner hitters were hit by a pitch in the frame, including junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) who was plunked twice and ran her season total to 22 HBPs.
Sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) had two RBI her self in the inning with a single and a bases loaded HBP. Senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) drove in another run with a single up the middle as well.
Wagner would add an additional run in the third on a RBI groundout by grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) that brought in junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster).
With the Seahawks taking care of business at the plate, senior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) handled the Knights on the mound. Miller (5-5) won her second straight decision scattering seven hits and one run over the five inning complete game in which she posted three strikeouts.
Batistelli supplied the long ball in game two with a three run shot in the third inning, her second of the year, which staked the Seahawks to a 6-0 lead. Back in the first inning, sophomore Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) drove in the first run with a double before Gallagher brought in two more runs with a double of her own.
In the sixth, Wagner forced their second mercy rule of the day scoring four unearned runs on three hits and two errors. Lazzari and Batistelli each drove in a run with two out RBI singles.
Eshelman (6-5) continued her brilliant weekend with her second consecutive two hit shutout. After giving up two singles in the first and walking a batter in the second, Eshelman was perfect the rest of the way, retiring the final 15 hitters in order while recording six strikeouts in her fourth shutout of the season.
Lazzari had four hits, including three doubles, and also scored three runs on the day. Gallagher and Eshelman each had three hits in the doubleheader as well. Overall the Wagner line-up pounded out 18 hits and drove in 19 runs.
The Seahawks head to Temple on Wednesday for a doubleheader.
