Brooklyn, NY - Wagner rode the powerful left-arm of Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) in a dominating 5-1 win in the first game of today's doubleheader at LIU Field. Testa (1-3) struck out six, including fanning the side in the third, over 7.0 innings and yielded just one unearned run on three hits and two walks. He also went the distance for the second-straight game and retired eight-straight at one point.
With the win the Seahawks take their second-straight over the Blackbirds and improve to 6-15 and 2-0 in the NEC. LIU falls to 5-15 and 1-1 in conference-play.
Wagner picked up right where they left off from yesterday's romp with three first-inning runs. Senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Freshman Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) then put the Seahawks on the scoreboard with a two-run blast over the 20-foot high fence in left field. Senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) kept the two-out rally going with a base hit. After moving to second on a balk, senior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) concluded the scoring with a base hit to left field allowing Mastrianni to score.
Wagner would add to the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) walked to lead off the frame and after a fly out stole second. Sophomore Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) then came to bat and battled his way to a full-count before ripping a single to bring home Csakai and put Wagner up 4-0. After another fly out Delleani picked up his first stolen base of the year and Mastrianni took advantage with his second hit of the day, an RBI single to left center to put Wagner in front 5-0.
LIU would break up the shutout in the seventh, scoring an unearned run on a groundout.
Seven different Seahawks had hits, led by Mastrianni, who was 2-3 with a run and a RBI. Despite being the catalyst for the big first-inning DiGeronimo went 0-3 to see his NEC-best hitting streak end at 21.
The two teams will begin game two at 2:15 pm.
