Box Score
Staten Island, NY - Junior lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) struck out eight while yielding just two unearned runs on three hits and senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawhtorne, NJ / Hawthorne) went 2-3 with a double and three RBI as Wagner (9-26; 4-9 NEC) snapped a 10-game losing streak defeating Fairleigh Dickinson (8-28; 3-9 NEC) 4-2 in game one of today's doubleheader at Dr. Bill Willetts Field.
The first game's pitching match-up featured two of the NEC's top pitchers in Staten Island native lhp John O'Hara and Testa and the pair didn't disappoint. O'Hara struck out seven but was done in by three two-out runs. Testa meanwhile cruised through the first four innings, facing the minimum 12 batter on his way to his fourth complete game of the season
After leaving two runners stranded in the first, the Seahawks finally broke through in the second. With two outs senior Pat Rogers (Middletown, NJ / Brookdale CC) drew a full-count walk. Sophomore Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) then smoked a line-drive single before freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. DiGeronimo singled on the first pitch he saw through the left side to plate Rogers and Drechsel to make it 2-0 Wagner.
Hitless into the fourth, Chris Grabowski broke up the no-hit bid when he singled to third to lead off the frame. However he would be erased on the next play when freshman Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) snared Jeff Vincent's line-drive to double up Grabowski.
The Knights would finally dent Testa in the fifth when they used a pair of hits and an error to score two unearned runs and tie the game up.
Wagner answered immediately in the bottom of the inning when Csakai collected his second hit of the day. He then stole second and was brought home when DiGeronimo doubled to center field to make it 3-2.
The Seahawks would add an insurance run in the sixth on freshman Kevin McDonnell's (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) first collegiate home run to right-center before Testa closed the door in the seventh. He didn't yield a walk on the day and allowed just one ball to reach the outfield in the air as he improved to 2-5 on the year. O'Hara struck out seven but surrendered four runs on eight hits to fall to 3-5.
DiGeronimo's two hits give him 202 for his career moving him past former teammates Nick Papa and Chris Dick for second on the Seahwaks career-list. 2001 grad and former Chicago Cubs farmhand Mike Cermanaro is first all-time with 214 hits. Also Testa's eight strikeouts give him 201 for his career, ranking him fourth in school history.
