Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College softball set a new school record with their 11th straight win in a 5-0 and 10-2 (6) sweep of visiting Manhattan at the Lower Athletic Field today. The Seahawks, behind a game one shutout from senior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) and a four RBI game from junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) in game two, improved to 23-15 with the sweep.
Miller allowed just four hits and struck out six in winning her fifth straight decision. The shutout was her fourth of the year and 16th of her decorated career.
The Seahawks felt the hurt of scoring two runs in the second inning as three hit-by-pitches helped gain the 2-0 lead. Freshman Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen), account for Wagner's only hit in the inning dropping a two out double into right. Batting next, junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) was the first player hit before sophomore Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV /Wooster) loaded the bases with a walk. Already the NCAA leader in HBP, junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) brought in the first run when she was hit for the 32nd time this season. Also hit in the Wagner at bat was sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic), who forced in Stevens.
Wagner extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth scoring three more runs on three hits. Vanore knocked in the first run with a RBI single into right the platted Stevens who double to lead off the frame. Lazzari (bunt single) then scored on a wild pitch before Iwicki's RBI groundout allowed Vanore to come in from third.
In game two, Manhattan took the early 2-0 lead in the second inning. After the first two batters were quickly put away, a Wagner error gave the Jaspers a threat. Lyndzie Phillips kept the inning going with a single to right ahead of a run scoring double by Liz Strein. A second run then came in on a passed ball as Wagner trailed by two.
Iwicki would cut the lead to half for the Seahawks in the last of the second with her third home run of the year, an opposite field shot to right. Eshelman then gave Wagner a 3-2 lead in the third when she helped her own cause with a two run shot into left, her fourth of the season. Junior Margaret Gallia (Las Vegas, NV / Community College HS) scored on the round tripper having led of the inning with a single.
Three straight one out singles by Batistelli, Iwicki, and grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, Pa / Hazleton) scored another run as the Seahawks went up 4-2 in the fourth.
The Wagner hit machine was at it again in the fifth as the Seahawks put two more run on the board for a 6-2 advantage. A walk to Eshelman and a bunt single by Stevens put two runners on for Iwicki who delivered her third hit (3-3) of the game, scoring both runs with a single through the left side.
The scoring continued in the sixth inning as the Seahawks put the game away with four more runs to force the 8-run mercy rule. Stevens raised her average to a team best .395 with a two run double that scored that scored pinch runner Danielle Waggoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) and Vanore. Lazzari followed as she loaded the bases and extended her hitting streak to 10 straight with a bloop infield single. Batistelli was then plunked for the 33rd time this year forcing in another run before Iwicki ended the contest with a sacrifice fly, her fifth RBI of the day.
Eshelman (10-6) picked up the victory on the mound scattering seven hits while giving up the two unearned runs.
