April 21, 2007

Box Score

Hamden, CT - Quinnipiac (14-10-1; 7-4 NEC) won in their last at-bat for the second time in three games with a 7-6 win over Wagner (8-24; 3-8 NEC) in game two of today's doubleheader at Bobcat Field. Seniors Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) and Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) combined with sophomores Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) and Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) to go 10-14 with three RBI and two doubles.

All eight of Wagner's losses in conference play have come back three runs or less, including five by just one run.

Quinnipiac jumped on Wagner early with four first-inning runs, taking advantage of a Seahawk-error and the hill in right field. With two outs and runners on the corners Pete Kummerfeldt singled home Ryan Rizzo to put Quinnipiac on the board. Jeff Mainetti then tripled to the right-center hill to make it 3-0 Bobcats. The Bobcats would tack on one more run to go in front 4-0.

The Seahawks would get one of the runs back in the third when Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) scored on a fielding-error by the rightfielder on Delleani's single.

Quinnipiac parlayed a pair of singles and a stolen base into a run in the fourth inning to go back up by four at 5-1.

The never-say die Seahawks would not go away as Mastrianni got a rally going with a one-out single in the sixth. After advancing to second on a wild pitch he scored when Sudol singled to right field. Sophomore Mike Maffucci (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) continued the onslaught by doubling to left center and bringing home pinch-runner Mike Musak (Syracuse, NY / Westhill), all the way from first. On the throw home Maffucci advanced to third and scored on Kevin McDonnell's (Fr., Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-4.

Wagner-starter freshman rhp Bobby Tretola (Union, NJ / Roselle Catholic) kept the Green & White in the game as with runners on second and third and no outs he dove to catch Bryn Doyle's bunt and double up Jeff Mainetti at third. He then struck out Jeff Marmo to keep the deficit at one, heading into the seventh.

The Seahawks started out the seventh with a Chris Drechsel (So, Cranford, NJ / Cranford) single. Following a pitching change he moved to second on a wild pitch. Csakai walked on four pitches before senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt as the Bobcats went for the lead runner to no avail. With the bases loaded Delleani singled to left to bring home Drechsel and tie the game up at 5-5. The Seahawks then took their first lead of the day at 6-5 when Mastrianni singled through the right side. On the play, DiGeronimo was thrown out at the plate and the Seahawks were unable to add to the lead.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Rizzo hit safely for the fourth time on the day with a double down the left field line. After a pitching change, Binkoski greeted sophomore Kevin Rush (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) with a single to tie up the game. Randy Gress then reached on another Seahawk-error. On the next play, Pete Kummerfeldt singled sharply up the middle and Csakai's throw nailed Binkoski at the plate to keep Wagner in the game. However after a pitching-change Mainetti singled on the first pitch he saw from freshman Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY / St. John The Baptist) to give Quinnipiac the 7-6 victory.

Tretola turned in another solid outing, giving up just two earned runs while striking out three and not walking a batter over 6.1 innings.

Quinnipiac reliever Tyler Brett (1-1) captured the win after hurling one inning of relief while Rush (0-1) took the loss.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game set tomorrow at 12 pm.
