Hamden, CT - On the strength of three unearned runs Quinnipiac (13-10-1; 6-4 NEC) defeated Wagner (8-23; 3-7 NEC) 5-2 in game one of today's doubleheader at Bobcat Field. Quinnipiac starter Andy Mayer retired the first 14 Seahawk batters in order and struck out seven while yielding two runs in a complete-game effort to improve to 4-2.

Seahawk-starter junior lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) turned in another solid start as he recorded his third complete game of the season and surrendered just two earned runs while striking out two over 6.0 innings. He falls to 1-5 on the season.

Quinnipiac scored three runs in the fourth, taking advantage of the first of three Wagner errors. With runners at second and third with one out, Jeff Mainatti brought home Tim Binkoski on a sacrifice fly. On the play, Randy Gress moved to third and scored on an errant-throw to make it 2-0. Jeff Kummerfeldt walked on the following play before moving to second on a passed ball. Wilson Matos rounded out the scoring in the frame with an RBI-double.

With two outs in the fifth, senior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) singled to break up the perfect game. Freshman Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) reached on an error by the third baseman and classmate Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) followed with a double down the right-field line that scored Sudol and McDonnell to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Seahawks threatened to tie the game up in the sixth as freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice and a ground out, but would be left stranded.

Quinnipiac got the two Seahawk-runs back fueled by a bloop single that got lost in the sun in the sixth.

Senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) was the only other player to record a hit for the Green & White, singling to lead off the seventh.
